José Benavente Deputy Headteacher
Physical Education
I am José Benavente, deputy headteacher and PE teacher of AIS. I was born in Alicante, Spain, but lived most of my life in Benidorm. I studied Sport Science at the Universidad de Valencia and the Master of Education at the Universidad de Alicante. Life took me to Germany, where I lived for almost three years and where I got my first job as PE teacher at the Waldorfschule werra meissner in Eschwege. This job opened the doors of AIS to me and I came back to start working here in 2016, where I feel home and a strong feeling of belonging. Along with my studies and career, I played basketball for 25 years and I could tell that basketball was my life. I have three furry children, two cats and a dog, which I adore and love to spend time playing with them.
Sally Mitchell Business I have been teaching Business at AIS since 2024, when I made the decision to return to teaching after a successful career as an entrepreneur. I obtained a BA in English Literature at Queen Mary University of London, an RMA in Literary and Cultural Theory at Universiteit van Amsterdam, and a PGCE in Secondary English at the University of Huddersfield. Therefore, I bring a multidisciplinary approach to the classroom, along with the benefit of real-world experience. My aim is to give you the tools to take an active interest in current events, international trade and politics, and the world beyond your own horizons. I have lived in the UK, Australia, and the Netherlands, before finally settling in Spain. I’m extremely grateful to have had the chance to keep exploring the world through the annual sixth-form trip, and I look forward to sharing our beautiful campus with you! Kirsty Wain Arts Kirsty Wain is a highly experienced Head of Creative Arts and Art Teacher who has served as the Head of the Arts Department at AIS Altea International School since 2025. Holding a BA Honours from the University of Portsmouth and a PGCE from UCE Birmingham, she has an extensive background in both international and UK mainstream education, teaching a broad spectrum of artistic disciplines across Key Stages 2 through 5. In her previous leadership role at Aloha College Marbella, her students consistently achieved outstanding grades in IGCSE, A Level, and IB Diploma examinations. Alongside her successful academic career, Kirsty remains a dedicated professional artist who continues to regularly exhibit her own paintings and watercolours in galleries throughout the United Kingdom and Spain. Amanda Pyott Psychology With over 30 years of international experience in education, leadership, performing arts, psychology, and A level teaching with proven results, I always endeavour to bring energy, insight, and enthusiasm to everything I teach. I am passionate about working with young people and love helping students explore the fascinating question of what makes us tick. Psychology sparks curiosity, lively discussion, and real self-awareness, and I strive to create dynamic, supportive lessons that inspire students to think deeply, challenge ideas, and grow in confidence both academically and personally. Gordon Tweedle Physical Education I have been teaching A Level PE for over 20 years (in both England and Spain) and know the course extremely well. At AIS our class sizes are small so you will receive lots of individual support and feedback. If you are into sport, you will love studying A Level PE.

A Level PE is an engaging course that links Biology, Physics, Psychology, and Business to explore sport from every angle. Paper 1 covers the science of performance, including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and movement. Paper 2 focuses on skill learning, sport psychology, and the impact of history, media, commercialisation, and technology in sport. You’ll also be assessed in a chosen sport and design a training programme to improve your performance.
Manos Karydis Physics Manos Biology Catriona Hughes My degree is in environmental science which covers a broad range of modules including ecology, renewable energy resources and geomorphology. After my degree I worked in special educational needs before completing my teacher training. Once I had completed this course I worked at Benenden School for 8 years moving into a Head of Biology role before emigrating to Spain. As KS4 coordinator my aim is to ensure students gain knowledge of revision techniques and skills to help them perform at their best in GCSE exams. I work closely with the class tutors to monitor the students' development socially and academically. As a teacher of science and A level Biology, I hope that my passion for science sparks interest in the students. I try to make lessons link to real life situations and ensure that students have a chance to complete a range of practical activities that go beyond the curriculum. Attila Vertesi ICT Sandor Attila Vertesi is an IT Teacher at the AIS Sixth Form Hub, bringing over 25 years of premium international experience teaching A-Level and IB Computer Science, Physics, and Mathematics.
