English and Languages

1. Can children start school without speaking English?
   Children can enrol at AIS up to, and including, class 7 without English. However, we recommend preparation prior to entering the school. Children will need to be able to speak and understand English at a basic level for entery into class 8 (and will be informally tested before being accepted) so that they have time to develope their language ability in time for the iGCSEs studied in class 9 and class 10.


2. All subjects are taught in English?
   All classes are taught in English, except for Spanish language, Valenciano, Gardening and Crafts.


3. All teachers are native English speakers?
   About 2/3 of the teachers are native English speakers.


4. How many hours of Spanish are taught per week?
   Three hours of Spanish are taught per week for each class.


5. What subjects are taught in Spanish?
   Spanish, Crafts and Gardening.


6. How many hours of Valencian are taught per week?
   One lesson of Valencian is given per week per class.


7. Which additional languages are taught at the school, from what age and how many hours?
   German is taught from class 7, age 12, twice a week.

Primary

1. Are students taught English from the beginning in Class 1 / Year 2?
   Yes, they start with English from Class 1. Our aproach is full immersion and translating as necessary (stories and key words). At the beginning of the school year numeracy topics with limited and basic vocabulary are taught.


2. When do they start with literacy in English?
   Children learn to read and write in class 1. Literacy is also developed through Form Drawing.


3. At what age do they start in Class 1?
   They must be 6 years old on September 1 of the school year, in some cases exceptions can be made, please contact the school.


4. Could you give us an example of Mindfulness for Class 1?
   When doing simple, wholesome activities in primary school, there are beautiful verses that accompany them to bring awareness to what we are doing. These verses help the child connect physically, mentally and emotionally. For example, before eating: ‘This food is a gift from the whole universe, the earth, the sky, the rain and the sun…’


5. Are the age groups put together when the minimum number of students is not reached?
   Yes, occasionally, however, we take care to balance the curriculum

Secondary

1. How many GCSEs are taught in Secondary?
   Between 5 – 8 (minimum of 5).


2. Is AIS an IB school?
   No, AIS is a British school offering GCSEs and A-levels.


3. Can students enter university with A-levels?
   Yes, the A-levels are validated by the Spanish system.


4. Is the Steiner Waldorf methodology followed in Secondary?
   In lower secondary (classes 7 and 8/ 1st and 2nd of ESO), AIS follows most of the core aspects of the Steiner Waldorf methodology, such as teaching the core subjects in blocks of the main lesson, creating their own workbooks specific to the main lesson (instead of learning from textbooks), and including subjects such as gardening and games in the timetable.
   In classes 9 and 10, GCSE prep years, we keep the rhythm of the main lesson timetable, but the curriculum focus is more on exam preparation. Class teachers continue to accompany their year groups during these years.


5. Do you use interactive screens?
   No, but each classroom has a chalkboard, whiteboard, projector and access to the internet if required.


6. Will the level of Valencian be enough to enter the University in the Comunidad Valenciana?
   Yes.

General

1. Do children have daily or vacation homework?
   It depends on the age. From KS3 on (Class 6, 7 and 8) although we don’t have daily homework, there will be some weekly homework.There are reading assignments, maths exercises, research for projects etc. In KS4 (Class 9 and 10) and Sixth Form (A levels) students will have daily work at home.


2. Do the children have tests?
   There are no standardised exams until GCSEs, only occasionally internal quizzes and tests. In Class 9 and Class10 (for iGCSE’s) and in Class 11 and 12 (for AS- and A-levels) teachers make use of tests and practice exams to fully prepare the children.


3. How are children assessed without exams?
   Evaluation is based on class work and participation, projects and presentations in class. In addition, the Main Lesson workbooks (content, presentation, use of English and effort), homework, assignments and tests (quizzes) are evaluated..


4. What and how many subjects does the tutor teach?
   In primary school, the class teacher is in charge of 80% of the classes, but in secondary school it varies depending on the tutor’s subject specialism.


5. How can parents help AIS?
   We have various events and field trips that rely on parental support. We also have parents who help in the classroom, at lunchtime, in the library, and when children need extra support.


6. How many teachers are there at the school?
   There are 17 teachers at AIS.


7. How many children per class?
   Class sizes vary from 12 to 18 students. Our maximum is 20 during regular timetable.


8. What are the school hours?
   8.30 – 3.30 pm

Additional Services

1. What are the bus routes and what areas does the route cover?
   The bus service comes from Teulada and from Alicante but it can be modified according to demand.


2. What is the price of the bus?
   100 – 140 euros per month depending on the location.


3. What is the lunch menu at the school?
   It is a hot vegetarian meal, made on site in the school’s kitvhen.


4. What is the price of the school lunch menu?
   90 – 120 euros/month depending on how many days there are in the month.


5. Can children bring their own meals?
   Yes, in secondary school children can bring their own food. In Primary the food is included in the fee.


6. What extracurricular activities does the school offer?
   Rap classes, basketball, arts and crafts, English, Spanish, gardening, music.


7. What is the price of the extracurricular activities?
   25 euros per month. The music classes are external and are charged separately.


8. What time do the extracurricular classes take place?
   3.45 – 4.45 pm.


9. What school supplies are included in the fee?
   All the usual materials used in the classroom, Notebooks, Colored pencils (Primary), Pritt, Paper, Cardboard, Art materials, Ink, Photocopies, Library books.


10. What additional materials the are needed are not included in the fees?
    Some craft materials for class projects, language workbooks (1 per year), Reading books (about 1 per year), revision books for iGCSE’s and A-Levels, a recorder (Flute) in class 1 and 3.


11. Other additional expenses?
    Trips and excursions are charged extra.
    

Inglés e Idiomas

1. ¿Pueden los niños empezar el colegio sin hablar inglés?
   Los niños pueden matricularse en AIS hasta la clase 7, inclusive, sin inglés. Sin embargo, recomendamos que se preparen antes de entrar en el colegio. Los niños tendrán que ser capaces de hablar y entender el inglés a un nivel básico para entrar en la clase 8 (y serán examinados informalmente antes de ser aceptados) para que tengan tiempo de desarrollar su capacidad lingüística a tiempo para los iGCSEs estudiados en la clase 9 y la clase 10.


2. ¿Todas las asignaturas se imparten en inglés?
   Todas las clases se imparten en inglés, a excepción de Lengua Española, Valenciano, Jardinería y Manualidades.


3. ¿Todos los profesores son nativos de inglés?
   Alrededor de 2/3 de los profesores son nativos de inglés.


4. ¿Cuántas horas de español se imparten a la semana?
   Se imparten tres horas de español a la semana por clase.

7. ¿Qué idiomas adicionales se imparten en el colegio, a partir de qué edad y cuántas horas?
   El alemán se imparte a partir de la clase 7, de 12 años, dos veces a la semana.

Primaria

1. ¿Se les enseña inglés a los alumnos desde el principio en la clase 1 / año 2?
   Sí, empiezan con el inglés desde la clase 1. Nuestro enfoque es la inmersión total y la traducción cuando es necesario (historias y palabras clave). Al principio del año escolar se enseñan temas de aritmética con vocabulario limitado y básico.


2. ¿Cuándo empiezan con la alfabetización en inglés?
   Los niños aprenden a leer y escribir en la clase 1. La alfabetización también se desarrolla a través de los Form Drawing (dibujos de formas).


3. ¿A qué edad empiezan en la clase 1?
   Deben tener 6 años el 1 de septiembre del año escolar, en algunos casos se pueden hacer excepciones, por favor, póngase en contacto con el colegio.


4. ¿Podría darnos un ejemplo de Mindfulness para la clase 1?
   Al realizar actividades sencillas y sanas en primaria, hay unos bonitos versos que las acompañan para tomar conciencia de lo que estamos haciendo. Estos versos ayudan al niño a conectarse física, mental y emocionalmente. Por ejemplo, antes de comer: ‘Esta comida es un regalo de todo el universo, la tierra, el cielo, la lluvia y el sol…’


5. ¿Se juntan los grupos de edad cuando no se alcanza el número mínimo de alumnos?
   Sí, ocasionalmente, sin embargo, cuidamos de equilibrar el currículo

Secundaria

1. ¿Cuántos GCSE se imparten en Secundaria?
   Entre 5 – 8 (mínimo de 5).


2. ¿Es AIS un colegio del IB?
   No, AIS es un colegio británico que ofrece GCSEs y A-levels.


3. ¿Pueden los estudiantes acceder a la universidad con los A-levels?
   Sí, los A-levels están convalidados por el sistema español.


4. ¿Se sigue la metodología Steiner Waldorf en Secundaria?
   En los primeros cursos de secundaria (clases 7 y 8/ 1º y 2º de la ESO), AIS sigue la mayoría de los principales aspectos de la metodología Steiner Waldorf, como la enseñanza de las asignaturas básicas en bloques de la clase principal, la creación de sus propios cuadernos de trabajo específicos para la clase principal (en lugar de aprender de los libros de texto), y la inclusión en el horario de asignaturas como jardinería y juegos.
   
   En las clases 9 y 10, años de preparación para el GCSE, mantenemos el ritmo de la clase principal, pero el plan de estudios se centra más en la preparación de los exámenes. Los tutores de las clases siguen acompañando a sus alumnos durante estos años.


5. ¿Utilizan pantallas interactivas?
   No, pero cada aula tiene una pizarra, una pizarra blanca, un proyector y acceso a Internet si es necesario.


6. ¿El nivel de valenciano será suficiente para acceder a la Universidad en la Comunidad Valenciana?
   Sí.

General

1. ¿Los niños tienen deberes diarios o en vacaciones?
   Depende de la edad. A partir de KS3 (clases 6, 7 y 8), aunque no tenemos deberes diarios, habrá algunos deberes semanales. Hay tareas de lectura, ejercicios de matemáticas, investigación para proyectos, etc. En KS4 (Clase 9 y 10) y Sixth Form (A levels) los alumnos tendrán trabajo diario en casa.


2. ¿Tienen los niños exámenes?
   No hay exámenes estandarizados hasta los GCSEs, sólo ocasionalmente pruebas y exámenes internos. En las clases 9 y 10 (para los iGCSE) y en las clases 11 y 12 (para los AS y A-levels) los profesores hacen uso de pruebas y exámenes de práctica para preparar adecuadamente a los alumnos.


3. ¿Cómo se evalúa a los niños sin exámenes?
   La evaluación se basa en el trabajo en clase y la participación, proyectos y presentaciones en clase. Además, se evalúan los cuadernos de la clase principal (contenido, presentación, uso del inglés y esfuerzo), los deberes, las tareas y los exámenes (quizzes).


4. ¿Qué y cuántas asignaturas imparte el tutor?
   En primaria, el profesor de la clase se encarga del 80% de las clases, pero en secundaria varía en función de las asignaturas en las que esté especializado el tutor.


5. ¿Cómo pueden los padres ayudar a AIS?
   Tenemos varios eventos y excursiones que dependen del apoyo de los padres. También tenemos padres que ayudan en el aula, a la hora de comer, en la biblioteca y cuando los niños necesitan apoyo extra.


6. ¿Cuántos profesores hay en el colegio?
   Hay 17 profesores en AIS.


7. ¿Cuántos niños hay por clase?
   El tamaño de las clases varía de 12 a 18 alumnos. Nuestro máximo es de 20 alumnos en el horario habitual.
